Club History
Tallaght Rockets Volleyball Club was born out of a former club known as Clonhouse Volleyball Club. Founded in the mid 1980s by a group of players from Clondalkin and Firhouse, the club name originated from the amalgamation of the two areas. The club was originally set up to allow both experienced and new volleyball players to join an adult club and compete in the Volleyball Association of Ireland (VAI) league and championship fixtures. Clonhouse also played in various tournaments over the years. The main aims of the club were (and continue to be) allowing club members to enjoy training, compete in matches, improve their volleyball skills, play as part of a team, and above all carry out sportsmanlike conduct. Clonhouse had a total of four adult teams: Division 1 Men, Division 1 Women, Division 2 Men and Division 2 Women.
The Tallaght Rockets Volleyball Club has carried on the traditions and aims of Clonhouse Volleyball Club. In the 2007/2008 season we had a Division 1 Women’s team finishing the season as champions of the league. This team were also runners-up in the National Intermediate Championships and winners of the prestigious Aer Lingus Tournament at the end of May that year.
During the 2008/2009 season the Division 1 team not only retained their title, but was also promoted to compete in the Premier 32 League of the VAI. The Division 2 team came 2nd in the league, narrowly missing out on promotion to Division 1. They also won the Junior Championships of the VAI, defeating a Division 1 team for the title.
The 2009/2010 season saw further successes for the club when our newly promoted Premier team came in 4th overall in the league and reached the final of the VAI Cup. Out of the original Division 2 team grew two new teams during that season. The Division 2A team came 3rd in their league and were runners-up in the Junior Championships.
During the 2010/2011 due to a variety of unfortunate reasons the Tallaght Rockets had to withdraw our Premier team from the Premier competition and enter them into Division 1. This team did extremely well and finished 3rd in Division 1, and also won the Intermediate Championships. The Division 2A team narrowly missed out on promotion to Division 1, finishing a close 2nd place in the league. The Division 2B team did well and finished a respectable 6th in Division 2.
